Sri Chintalapati Varaprasada Murthy Raju Government Degree College was established in 1972 under the management of Sri Chintalapati Bapiraju Dharma Samsthalu by Sri Chintalapati Vara Prasada Murthy Raju, a Gandhian Philosopher and Ex-minister of Andhra Pradesh. His life is a stellar example of how a true Gandhian would lead his life, spurning all worldly pleasures and giving away all that he owned to the society at large. He established 68 educational institutions in rural and backward areas in this district with emphasis on girl education; and donated 1800 acres of land for the cause of society. He considered “Right education” as the key to peace and prosperity.
