In Memory of Dr. T. Akki Raju: Group Discussion on Population Management Policy-12.03.2026

A thought-provoking Group Discussion on the topic “Proposed Population Management Policy by the Government of Andhra Pradesh – Pros and Cons” was successfully organized on 12th March 2026 by the Department of Economics at S.Ch.V.P.M.R. Government Degree College, Ganapavaram.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of Principal Dr. P. Nirmala Kumari, who continually encourages academic enrichment and student-centered learning practices in the institution.

The event was organized by Dr. K. Swarupa Rani, Lecturer in Economics, in fond memory of Dr. T. Akki Raju, with the objective of enhancing students’ awareness of contemporary demographic issues and fostering critical thinking on public policy.

The discussion began with an overview of the demographic trends in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting the declining Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and its potential socio-economic implications such as workforce reduction and population ageing.

Students actively engaged in analyzing the key features of the proposed population management policy, including:

  • A comprehensive five-pillar framework focusing on motherhood, women empowerment, welfare, skill development, and digital health
  • Financial incentives for childbirth
  • Free education and nutrition support for children
  • Enhanced parental leave and childcare support
  • Strengthening healthcare services including fertility and maternal care
  • Initiatives for women empowerment and elderly welfare

A total of 15 students from I & II B.A. participated enthusiastically, presenting diverse perspectives on the policy. While many appreciated the policy as a proactive step toward demographic balance and sustainable development, others critically examined concerns such as financial feasibility and long-term effectiveness.

The programme proved to be an enriching academic exercise, promoting analytical thinking, policy awareness, and active student participation.
