Celebrated National Handloom Day with a theme encouraging handlooms, organized by the Women Empowerment Cell and Eco Club of the college. On 6th August 2024, we screened two documentary films focusing on the legacy of Indian handlooms and the plight of handloom weavers in India. We also screened the film “Mallesham,” a biopic of Chintakindi Mallesham, a weaver who invented the ASU MACHINE, which reduced weaving time from six hours to ninety minutes and earned him the Padma Shri award in 2015.
On 7th August 2024, we conducted a PPT-making and presentation competition for students on the theme “Handlooms of India/Andhra Pradesh.” Three teams participated: Manjunadheswari, Samyuktha, and Akshita from III MPCS; Mounika from III BZC; and Durga and Jessy from III BCOM. They presented their PPTs covering different fabrics and designs of Indian and AP handlooms, as well as the challenges faced by handloom weavers. All the presentations were excellent, and the participants received handloom towels as a token of appreciation from our principal.
On the day of the event, all staff members wore handloom outfits and displayed placards with the message “Encouraging Handlooms” to inspire students to support and appreciate handlooms.
