Awareness Programme on Wearing Helmet-26.07.2024

The NSS Unit-1 of GDC Ganapavaram conducted an awareness program focused on the importance of wearing helmets for two-wheel riders. Dr. P. Nirmala Kumari was the chief guest at the event, where she educated students about the critical benefits of wearing helmets. She emphasized that helmets can significantly reduce the risk of serious head or brain injuries and also mitigate the risk of severe injuries to the face and neck.

In India, it is mandatory for all bike and scooter riders, including pillion riders, to wear a helmet. However, this requirement may vary from state to state. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of sustaining a serious brain injury or death because, during a fall or collision, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the helmet rather than your head and brain.

Benefits of Wearing a Helmet:

  1. Reduction of Head Injuries: Helmets are effective in reducing head injuries. Wearing a helmet diminishes the impact of an accident on your head. While riding a two-wheeler, there’s a significant chance that head injuries sustained in an accident can be fatal if you aren’t wearing a helmet. A collision without a helmet might result in both external and internal brain injuries, which could be life-threatening. Therefore, wearing a helmet is crucial for safeguarding your life.
  2. Protection for Your Eyes: A full-faced helmet covers your entire face, offering comprehensive protection in the event of an accident. This type of helmet shields your eyes from dust, debris, and the glare of high-beam lights while riding. Additionally, the design of these helmets provides maximum visibility, allowing for a clear sight range while driving.
  3. Improved Vehicle Control: Wearing a helmet enhances your focus and attention while riding. It encourages cautious behavior and helps control your speed, thus significantly lowering the chances of an accident. Helmets contribute to safer driving practices by making riders more aware and vigilant on the road.

Dr. Nirmala Kumari reiterated that wearing a helmet is not just a legal obligation but a crucial safety measure. She urged students to always prioritize their safety by wearing helmets every time they ride a two-wheeler, thereby setting an example for others and promoting a culture of safety.
